The Tombs in the Deep

The Thokt sleep in a place the void itself has hidden. Their coreworlds lie within the Hyrakii Deeps of the Segmentum Pacificus, a region of shifting void-rifts that drift and reform across the aeons and screen the dynasty from sight, and at their heart turns the crownworld Meghoshta, the Cradle of War. Around it lesser worlds wheel in a slow and stately dance, and around those orbit smaller planetoids, each one bristling with weaponry until the whole system is a fortress in motion. The crystalline continent-tombs of the Thokt do not merely endure in this place. They feed on it, drinking the radioactive power that bleeds from the torn sky overhead.

Wreathed in Blue Fire

Everything about the Thokt burns a cold electric azure. The energy of the rifts seeps into their tombs and into the soldiers raised from them, until a sparking blue light pours from the eyes of their Warriors, from the seams and cracks in their metal frames, and from the muzzles of their guns. This is not decoration; it is barely contained power, harvested and stored against the moment of war. The dynasty's Crypteks, its arcane engineer-priests, have built rad-receptors into the very weapons their soldiers carry, so that each gun draws on the radiation of the void-rifts. A Thokt host on the march glows like a coming storm, and the sky above their crownworld hangs thick with rippling darkness and the streak of blue comets.

Annihilation at Range

Where the Novokh close to arm's reach, the Thokt never wish to. Theirs is the doctrine of the killing field: rank upon rank of gauss weaponry, fed by harnessed radiation, opening fire in pitiless unison and stripping the enemy from existence atom by atom before he can ever cross the open ground between. The gauss flayer flenses living matter molecule by molecule, and in Thokt hands it does worse, for a wound that merely grazes a foe can still kill him hours later as the radiation it carries burns through his body. To assault the Thokt is to die twice over, disintegrated by their fire or poisoned by the smallest scratch, and either way to never reach the cold blue line that is doing the shooting.

The War of WAAAGH! Bludtoof

The dynasty's long sleep was broken not by the Imperium but by the Orks. In 994.M41 the green tide of WAAAGH! Bludtoof crashed into the fringe worlds of the Thokt, and what followed was a grinding war of attrition in which entire planets were reduced to killing fields. The Orks revel in exactly the kind of close, churning slaughter that Thokt doctrine is built to deny them, and the meeting of an unstoppable horde and an immovable wall of radioactive fire turned whole worlds to ash and bone. The fringe of the dynasty bled, but the Deeps held, and the void-rifts kept the heart of the Thokt hidden even as their borders burned.

Against the Galaxy

To the Imperium and to every warm-blooded power of the galaxy, the Thokt represent annihilation without approach. There is no clever counter to a foe that simply deletes the ground in front of it, and the radiation that haloes their armies makes even victory poisonous to the survivors. The dynasty is not expansionist in the manner of the Sautekh; its worlds are clustered and hidden, and it fights chiefly to keep what the void-rifts conceal. But a power that can scour a planet from beyond the reach of any blade needs no empire to be feared, and those who have faced the cold blue line and lived speak of it the way other men speak of fire.

The Storm Rekindled

Into the M42 the Thokt rouse fully from the Hyrakii Deeps, their crystalline tombs flaring brighter as the void-rifts pour their power into a dynasty waking to war. The scars of WAAAGH! Bludtoof still mark the fringe worlds, but the Cradle of War is stirring, and the azure glow that once seeped from sealed tombs now lights whole battle-lines. As the great Necron resurgence rises across the galaxy under the returned Silent King, the Thokt offer it a weapon few other dynasties can match: armies that wield the raw energy of torn space itself, and a doctrine that asks only for clear sight of the enemy and open ground across which to erase him.
