The Kabal of Venom and Intrigue

Among the warring kabals of Commorragh — the hidden Dark City of the Drukhari, coiled within the Webway — the Poisoned Tongue is a power feared as much for its cunning as its cruelty. A kabal is a Drukhari pirate-dynasty, a brotherhood of murderers bound to a single Archon's ambition, and the Poisoned Tongue has risen to the front rank of these factions. It takes its name from its preferred art: the venom administered before the victim ever suspects he is poisoned, the lie that turns ally against ally, the elegant treachery that wins a war before a single blade is openly drawn. Where cruder kabals revel in slaughter, the Poisoned Tongue prefers to have already won.

Venom Before the Blade

The Poisoned Tongue wages war in a manner that mirrors its name. Before its raiders ever descend in the open, the kabal seeds its enemies' ranks with infiltrators, assassins and mass poisonings, unstitching command and morale until the foe is sick, leaderless and reeling. Only then do the raiding parties strike — swift skimmer-craft and bladed warriors tearing through prey already broken from within, snatching captives and spiriting them back through the Webway to Commorragh before any defence can form. It is a doctrine of the unfair advantage perfected: the Drukhari predator's love of the easy kill married to a patience and forethought rare even among their devious kind. By the time the Poisoned Tongue is seen, the battle is usually already lost.

Lady Aurelia Malys, the Mazeweaver

The kabal answers to Lady Aurelia Malys, reckoned the most coldly brilliant Archon in all Commorragh. Though not yet a thousand years old — young by Drukhari measure — she is the only Archon who has matched Asdrubael Vect, the Dark City's overlord, in wit time and again, and she is gifted with an unsettling precognition that lets her read the future's branching paths. Her schemes interlock in such bewildering profusion that she has earned the name "the Mazeweaver," for to oppose her is to wander a labyrinth of her design. Where other Drukhari are creatures of appetite and impulse, Malys is a mind of glacial calculation — the most dangerous thing in a city of monsters: a monster who never loses her composure.

The Heart of Crystal

Malys was once a consort of Asdrubael Vect himself, and even then her brilliance set her apart; she rose to prominence in his Inner Circle, not least through the cunning she displayed in the Panacea Wars. In time Vect tired of her and cast her from his court — a banishment that bred an enmity now legendary in Commorragh. The strangest tale told of her concerns her victory in a contest of wills against Cegorach, the Laughing God, who is said to have vanished and left behind a blade and a crystal heart. Malys, so the legend runs, cut out her own heart and set the crystal in its place. Whatever the truth, it suits her perfectly: an Archon who feels nothing, schemes without passion, and pursues Vect's ruin with the patience of ice.

The Long Game Against Vect

The defining contest of the Poisoned Tongue is its Archon's rivalry with Asdrubael Vect, the ancient tyrant who rules Commorragh through terror and unmatched scheming. Malys is the foremost of the rivals circling his throne, and the only one whose intellect he is said genuinely to respect — and fear. Theirs is not a war of fleets but of plots: gambits laid decades in advance, betrayals nested within betrayals, each move calculated to leave the other weaker without ever quite triggering open ruin. In a city where power is won by murder and held by paranoia, the duel between Vect and Malys is the great game beneath all others, watched by every Archon waiting to see which mind finally outlasts the other.

The Kabal in the Age of the Rift

When the Great Rift split the galaxy and the heavens drowned in warp-light, the Drukhari found their dark harvests richer than in millennia — more worlds left isolated, more victims to be poisoned and seized. For a kabal that strikes through guile, the chaos of the broken age is a vast and inviting hunting-ground, every severed Imperial outpost a fresh maze to thread. Malys's power in Commorragh has only risen amid the upheaval, her gambits multiplying as the Dark City gorges on a galaxy in agony. The Poisoned Tongue prospers as it always has: striking from the shadows, leaving venom where others leave blood, and serving the cold ambition of the one Archon who never, ever loses her head.
