Orks Without a Klan

The Freebooterz are the rogues of the greenskin race, Orks who have cut loose from klan and tribe, whether by choice or by exile, to live as pirates and mercenaries among the stars. Some are the battered remnants of shattered warbands; others are eccentrics, troublemakers and fugitives who could not abide the herd. Cast off from their old loyalties, they discard their klan glyphs and reinvent themselves entirely, swaggering about in flamboyant, looted finery hung with piercings and trophies, each band flying its own gaudy, personalised insignia. A Freebooter answers to no Warlord and no klan, only to his Kaptin, his crew and the bottomless greenskin hunger for loot and a good scrap.

Plunder and the Biggest Dakka

What unites every Freebooter is naked, unapologetic greed. They are pirates through and through, forever sniffing out fresh plunder, and unlike honest Boyz they will sometimes pass up a perfectly good punch-up in favour of hauling their swag to safety, a calculation most Orks find baffling and faintly shameful. With their pillaged wealth they buy the one thing every Ork truly covets: more dakka, bigger dakka, the loudest and gaudiest guns that teef can purchase. A Freebooter crew carries firepower enough to flatten a fortified hab-block, every barrel chromed and bedecked, and the Kaptin always totes the most fearsome, most ostentatious shoota of the lot, because among pirates the biggest gun is the throne.

Flash Gitz and Kill Kroozers

The most notorious Freebooterz are the Flash Gitz, swaggering gunslingers who have grown rich enough to commission absurdly over-engineered kustom shootas from indulgent Meks, then flaunt them like crown jewels. Such bands cross the void aboard plundered Kill Kroozers, steel-jawed pirate warships crewed by howling Boyz, descending on softer worlds and weaker fleets to strip them bare. A Freebooter raid is sudden and mercenary: hit the prize, take the loot, and be gone before a proper response can muster, though if the fighting is good enough they will happily stay for that too. They sell their guns to greater Warbosses, fight alongside any WAAAGH! that pays, and betray it the instant a richer offer sails past.

Kaptin Badrukk of Da Blacktoof

No Freebooter is more infamous than Kaptin Badrukk, Hero of the War of Dakka, Breaker of the Grand Guard and Plunderer of Tanhotep. Chased out of the Bad Moons klan, so the tale goes, on charges of having too many teef for his own good, Badrukk has since eclipsed every rival kaptin in Orkdom. For decades he has prowled the stars aboard his steel-jawed Kill Kroozer Da Blacktoof at the head of his Flash Gitz, selling his guns to one Warboss after another. In 993.M41, fighting alongside the fleet of Warlord Garaghak, he blunted a tendril of the Tyranid Hive Fleet Kraken with an all-guns-blazing raid driven straight at the Norn-Queen at its heart.

How the Imperium Regards Them

To the Imperial Navy the Freebooterz are a plague upon the spacelanes, raiders who strike convoys and orbital stations without warning and vanish into the dark before the picket squadrons can close. Because they keep no territory and obey no Warlord, they cannot be pinned to a single world and burned out; one Kill Kroozer destroyed simply means its survivors loot another and sail on. Navy doctrine therefore treats them as commerce-raiders, escorting vital convoys in strength and laying ambushes along the trade routes they favour. Yet the void is vast and the pirates are patient, and for every Freebooter band the Imperium hunts down, another is born the moment some restless Ork decides the open stars look richer than his klan.

M41–M42 Status

The shattered galaxy of the Era Indomitus is a pirate's paradise. With the opening of the Great Rift severing trade routes and stranding fleets across the Imperium Nihilus, the Freebooterz feast on the disorder, falling upon undefended shipping and isolated worlds with gleeful abandon. Kaptin Badrukk and Da Blacktoof remain at large, more storied and better-armed than ever, while countless lesser kaptins follow his example into the lawless dark. Their guns turn up in every great WAAAGH! of the age, hired and then discarded, and their raids bleed the Imperium's lifelines a convoy at a time. So long as there is loot adrift among the stars, there will be Orks with a Kill Kroozer and an appetite, sailing out to take it.
