The Walking Away

Commander Farsight (O'Shovah, "the Bright Sword") was one of Commander Puretide's four legendary students and, before his secession, one of the T'au Empire's most successful Fire Caste commanders. He led expeditionary forces against Imperial counter-attacks during the Damocles Gulf Crusade. He won engagements his peers considered unwinnable. He was, by every metric the empire used, model.

Then, at the end of the campaign, he refused to return home. He took his expeditionary force and roughly seven other star systems (the count is disputed) and announced an independent T'au polity beyond Ethereal Council jurisdiction. The empire was, by all surviving diplomatic records, stunned. Farsight has not, in the centuries since, explained the decision in any public address. The Enclaves continue to fight in Tau'va terms. They do not accept Ethereal envoys.

I am still T'au. I am still serving the Greater Good. I am simply doing it without instruction.

— Commander Farsight, attributed secession-era transmission

The Dawn Blade

Farsight carries a weapon — the Dawn Blade — recovered during a campaign on a world the T'au designate Arthas Moloch and have classified beyond Empire-citizen access. The weapon is, by every Mechanicus xenos-evaluation that has been allowed to examine combat footage, an Aeldari relic of the pre-Fall era, possibly older. Farsight uses it routinely. He does not, however, discuss its origin.

The persistent Imperial Inquisitorial theory: Farsight encountered something on Arthas Moloch — most likely a buried truth about the Ethereals' actual nature, possibly Chaos-touched, possibly C'tan-origin, possibly Aeldari prophetic — that convinced him the Ethereal Council was either deceived or deceiving. The secession is, by this theory, his attempt to preserve Tau'va while staying out of contact with whatever the Council represents. Farsight has neither confirmed nor denied this. He has refused all invitations to clarify.

The Empire's Patience

The T'au Empire has not, in three centuries, attempted to militarily recover the Enclaves. Several explanations exist. The official Ethereal position is that Farsight will eventually return when his confusion resolves; this is propaganda but not without followers. The military position is that the Enclaves are tactically defensible — they fight Tau-quality battlesuit warfare with experienced commanders, and the cost of forcing them back would be high. The political position, held privately, is that resolving the Enclaves would require addressing the question of why Farsight left, which the Council cannot afford to do.

Farsight is now several centuries old by T'au reckoning, far beyond normal Fire Caste lifespan. His longevity is, by Mechanicus speculation, related to whatever happened on Arthas Moloch. The Enclaves are run by him personally; he has named no successor and shown no signs of preparing the polity for life without him. The empire waits.

The Eight Enclave Worlds

The Farsight Enclaves — the breakaway T'au polity governed by Commander Farsight from the species' main political framework — consists of eight specific worlds in the galactic eastern fringe. The Enclaves' specific worlds are located approximately three Terran-equivalent T'au centuries' standard travel-time from the T'au species' primary Sept-system; the geographic distance has been operationally essential to the Enclaves' sustained political independence. The Enclaves were established by Farsight in approximately 998.M41 following the species' Aun (Ethereal) command's withdrawal of operational authority from him during a specific operational engagement that the species' political record has not fully documented.

The Enclave worlds' specific operational character is shaped by the eight worlds' shared institutional history: each world hosts a substantial Fire Caste military population recruited from the species' broader Fire Caste cohort, each world maintains independent industrial-and-administrative infrastructure not coordinated with the broader T'au species' Sept-system, and each world's specific political authority is held by Commander Farsight personally or by his designated subordinates. The arrangement is, by T'au species cultural assessment, "an unprecedented political experiment within the species' institutional history."

M42 Diplomatic Posture

The Farsight Enclaves' M42-era diplomatic posture has been the most-active diplomatic engagement in the Enclaves' post-establishment history. Farsight has, since 002.M42, conducted sustained diplomatic engagement with: the Indomitus Crusade's senior command (through irregular communications with specific Imperial diplomatic intermediaries), the Aeldari species' senior representatives (through specific Aeldari Farseer communications), and selected non-aligned Imperial sector governors. The diplomatic engagement has produced specific operational arrangements that the broader T'au Empire's Aun command has classified as "operationally significant if politically irregular."

The specific operational arrangements have included: coordinated anti-Chaos engagement between Farsight's Fire Caste forces and the Indomitus Crusade in approximately twelve documented incidents, intelligence-sharing protocols between the Enclaves and certain Aeldari Craftworlds, and diplomatic recognition of the Enclaves' independent political authority by approximately fourteen non-aligned Imperial sector governors. The arrangements have shifted the Enclaves' specific institutional position within the broader galactic political landscape; the Enclaves are, by Imperial Cult intelligence assessment, "the most-politically-active xenos political entity in the post-Rift Indomitus era."

The Empire would prefer we did not exist. Existence has not been negotiable.
