The Seat of Learning

If Sa'cea is the Empire's discipline, Bork'an is its mind. This sept is the acknowledged centre of education for all T'au — a world crowded not with arcologies but with libraries, universities and research stations, and home to the most prestigious military training centre in the entire realm. Bork'an holds the highest concentration of the Earth caste, the patient artisan-scientists who build everything the T'au are, and its citizens are reckoned the most scholarly of their kind. The very air of its campuses hums with experiment: the cold blue glow of containment fields, the murmur of recitation, the faint ozone tang of a prototype being pushed past its tested limits and noted, calmly, in the record.

The Cerebral Caste

Warriors of Bork'an are known as cerebral and restrained, a temperament shaped by a culture that prizes the considered answer over the quick one. Where another sept might admire daring, Bork'an admires precision — the cleanly solved problem, the elegantly minimised cost. Its Fire Warriors carry this disposition into battle: measured, analytical, more inclined to range and angle than to fury. Among the Earth caste's celebrated achievements are stasis technology and the first piloted battlesuit, the breakthrough that gave the T'au their soaring Crisis and Stealth suits. To be of Bork'an is to believe that the universe is a puzzle, that every puzzle yields to study, and that patience is itself a kind of weapon.

War at the Longest Reach

Bork'an's armies fight the way its scientists think — from a careful distance, with the finest tools the Empire can forge. Its Fire Warriors are routinely issued prototype weapons and experimental support systems fresh from the laboratories, and the sept's gunnery is famed for outranging nearly any foe it meets. The doctrine is simple and merciless: see the enemy before he sees you, and kill him before he closes. Railguns and pulse weapons crack out across kilometres of open ground; markerlights stitch their targets long before the foe can reply; and an attacker who finally reaches Bork'an's lines has already crossed a field sown with his own dead. The longest reach, the T'au of Bork'an hold, is the surest victory.

The Workshop of the Empire

Nearly every leap in T'au capability can be traced, in some measure, back to Bork'an's workshops. It was here that the Earth caste mastered the stasis-field and birthed the first battlesuit pilot-rig, and here that the longer-ranged variants of the Empire's arsenal are conceived and trialled before they spread to other septs. Earth-caste savants of differing schools pursue divergent paths — Bork'an chasing reach and refinement where rivals such as Vior'la chase raw close-range impact — and the friendly competition drives the whole Empire forward. When a cadre anywhere in T'au space takes the field with some unfamiliar new device, the odds are good that its blueprint was first drawn beneath the cold lamps of Bork'an.

The Reasonable Threat

To the Imperium, Bork'an embodies the quieter danger of the T'au: not the screaming charge but the patient improvement. The Adeptus Mechanicus regard all xenos innovation as anathema, yet the uncomfortable truth is that the T'au advance their war-craft within a single lifetime while the Imperium merely recovers fragments of its own forgotten past. Bork'an offers the conquered peoples of the frontier a seductive bargain — join us, and your children will be taught, not merely used. The sept extends its earnest hand believing it brings enlightenment. That its enlightenment arrives behind the longest gun-line in the Empire is, to the scholars of Bork'an, simply the necessary order of things.

The Sept in the Age of Endless War

Into M42, Bork'an remains the Empire's engine of discovery, its laboratories straining to answer the ever-stranger threats the galaxy hurls at the T'au. Each new sphere of expansion, each clash with Imperial guns or older horrors, returns home as data to be studied and surpassed. While the wider galaxy decays and forgets, Bork'an does the unthinkable thing that so frightens its enemies: it learns, and it improves, and it does so faster every year. In a universe of ten-thousand-year stagnation, the calm scholars of Bork'an press steadily on toward a tomorrow they alone seem certain still exists.
