The Toofy Economy
The Ork economy runs on teeth. Ork teeth (Ork: "teef") regenerate when lost, with the rate of regeneration varying by individual. Most Orks regrow teeth at standard rate. Bad Moons regrow teeth roughly twice as fast as standard Orks. Because Ork commercial exchange uses teeth as currency, Bad Moons are intrinsically wealthier than other klans — they generate more currency through normal physiological function.
The wealth shows. Bad Moons field the heaviest individual armament of any klan: long-barrel shootas, multiple-barrel big shootas, the heavy weapon teams that other klans cannot afford to maintain. Their aesthetic is yellow — the colour of the wealthy in Ork visual culture — with gold-plated brass fittings on weapons, ostentatious teef-strung jewellery, and helmet ornamentation that other klans consider extravagant. Bad Moon warbosses are typically the most physically armoured of any Ork field commander.
The Dakka Doctrine
Where Goffs close to melee, Bad Moons stand at range and fire. Their tactical doctrine is sustained, high-volume ranged combat. The doctrine works because Bad Moons can afford ammunition that the other klans cannot — they fire faster, longer, and with bigger guns. They are, by Mechanicus assessment, the closest Ork klan to fighting in a recognisable Imperial Guard pattern: prepared firing positions, fire-team coordination, ammunition discipline (relative to other Orks, who have effectively none).
This makes them dangerous in a specific way. An Imperial Guard force engaging Bad Moons gets out-shot in volume. The Goff doctrine of overwhelming numbers does not work for Bad Moons — they do not field the bodies — but the Bad Moon doctrine of overwhelming firepower compensates. Most Bad Moon campaigns are coalitions: Bad Moons supply the guns, Goffs or another klan supply the bodies, the wealth pays for both.
Da Goffs got da fists. We got da guns. Da guns wins.
— Big Mek Wazdakka Gutsmek, attributed mid-M41
The Resentment
Bad Moons are, by inter-Ork social structure, the klan most-resented by other klans. The other klans consider Bad Moons less honourable (they don't close to melee), less manly (they shoot from cover), and less authentically Orkish (the obsession with currency reads as un-Orkish patience). Bad Moons do not care. Their wealth lets them buy alliances when they need them. Other klan warbosses who criticise Bad Moons in public tend to find their next campaign's gun supply unreliable.
The Imperial counter-strategy against Bad Moons is to disrupt their supply lines specifically — Mek-clan workshops, ammunition production sites, looted Imperial weapon caches. The doctrine works partially. Bad Moons are still wealthy enough that disruption costs them less than equivalent disruption costs Goffs. They are, by Inquisitorial assessment, the Ork klan most resistant to long-term Imperial pressure.
The Klan Identity
The Bad Moons klan — currently the second-largest single Ork klan by sustained operational mass — is identified by specific cultural-and-operational markers that distinguish it from the Goff klan and from the Ork species' other major klans. The Bad Moons klan's specific markers include: predominantly yellow-coloured operational gear (the klan's distinctive cultural color), preference for ranged-firepower-emphasised operational doctrine, and specific cultural emphasis on individual operational wealth (the Bad Moons measure individual social status by accumulated operational gear and weaponry).
The Bad Moons klan's specific institutional advantage is the klan's distinctive biological characteristic: Bad Moons-klan Orks regenerate their teeth at substantially higher rates than other Ork-klan members. The Ork species' standard currency is teeth ("teef" in the Ork species' dialect), which means Bad Moons-klan members have sustained currency-generation capability that other Ork-klan members do not. The biological advantage has been the foundation of the Bad Moons-klan's specific institutional position within the Ork species' broader economic structure.
The Tooth Economy
The Ork species' specific operational economic structure — the tooth-economy ("teef" by Ork dialect) — operates as a sustained-currency system in which Ork teeth function as the species' standard medium of exchange. The system's specific operational mechanism is: every Ork's teeth are biologically renewed at varying rates across the species, creating sustained currency-supply, and every Ork's teeth are extractable upon death or through specific trading arrangements, creating sustained currency-circulation.
The Bad Moons klan's specific institutional position within the tooth-economy is that of the Ork species' senior accumulator: Bad Moons-klan members hold approximately forty percent of the species' aggregate sustained tooth-wealth, despite constituting only approximately fifteen percent of the species' total population. The position is sustained through the klan's specific biological advantage (higher tooth-regeneration rate) and through specific institutional practices that the klan has developed across approximately ten thousand years of Ork species operational history. The position is, by other Ork klans' classification, "tolerated but resented."
The Inter-Klan Resentment
The Bad Moons klan's specific inter-klan resentment relationship has been sustained across approximately ten thousand years of Ork species operational history. Other Ork klans' specific cultural-and-political position is that the Bad Moons klan's sustained wealth-accumulation is operationally unfair — that the Bad Moons klan's specific biological advantage gives the klan an unearned institutional position within the broader Ork species' economic structure. The resentment has produced approximately seventeen documented major inter-klan engagements across the Ork species' operational history, in each of which the Bad Moons klan has retained its specific wealth-accumulation position.
The resentment is, by Ork species cultural classification, "operationally sustained and unlikely to be resolved." The Bad Moons klan's senior Warbosses have, across the species' operational history, developed sustained institutional defensive mechanisms against the inter-klan resentment — including the klan's specific Dakka Doctrine, which provides sustained operational capability against any individual inter-klan engagement. The resentment's specific operational consequence has been that the Bad Moons klan is operationally less-engaged in coordinated species-wide WAAAGH! operations (including Ghazghkull's M42-era operations) than the Goff klan, despite the Bad Moons klan's operational mass being only slightly smaller than the Goff klan's.
