The Ardent Blade

The Flame

The Ardent Blade is, by every Adepta Sororitas record, a two-handed flaming sword whose flame is sustained not by any conventional power-source but by Celestine's own faith. The flame burns hottest against Chaos foes; against ordinary mortal opponents the blade behaves like an unremarkable power weapon.

No Mechanicus assessor has found a mechanism. No Apothecary inspection has revealed a fuel reservoir. Celestine has not, in two centuries of public ministry, offered an explanation.

The Return

The blade appeared in Celestine's hand when she first walked out of the funerary chapel in 911.M41 — three days after her death in the Palatine campaign. It has been with her continuously since. When she has died in subsequent engagements — many times — the blade has gone wherever she goes during her Silences, returning with her each time.

In Battle

Celestine cuts through daemons with notable ease. Against Greater Daemons the Blade has banished, by Sororitas count, at least seven entities of Bloodthirster and Keeper-of-Secrets grade. Against Chaos Champions it has the secondary property — by veteran Sororitas testimony — of inducing in the cut-but-not-killed a brief moment of doubt about their patron.

Whether that doubt is a property of the blade or of being cut by a Living Saint is not, in any Imperial record, decided.

The Heresy-Era Origin

The Ardent Blade is a single-edged power-sword of Heresy-era origin, forged by the Salamanders' Heresy-era Master Smith — possibly Vulkan himself, possibly a senior forge-master operating under his supervision — for use by the Salamanders Captain Cassian Dracos during the closing years of the Great Crusade. Dracos was a senior Captain known for engagements against Heresy-era Iron Warriors and Word Bearers; the Blade was crafted specifically to his combat preferences, which favored long-range strike capability over close-quarters versatility.

The Blade's specific design — single-edged, slightly curved at the tip, with a forge-flame inset where the blade meets the hilt — is consistent with Salamanders Heresy-era weapon-making traditions. The forge-flame element is the Blade's defining feature: like the Spear of Telesto, the Ardent Blade carries a permanent forge-flame at the hilt-blade junction. The flame's specific behaviour is, by chapter doctrine, related to the Blade's spiritual disposition toward its wielder.

The Loss and Return

The Ardent Blade was lost in 008.M31 when Dracos was killed during a Salamanders engagement against an Iron Warriors siege formation on the world of Pulgaris. The engagement was a Salamanders defeat; Dracos's body and the Blade were both abandoned to Iron Warriors custody. The Iron Warriors retained the Blade as a trophy. The Salamanders' chapter-internal record of the loss includes a single sentence: "Recover when possible."

The recovery took six hundred and forty years. In 648.M31, a Salamanders strike force led by the chapter's then-Captain Vel'kor located the Blade in an Iron Warriors fortress-monastery on a daemon-world inside the Eye of Terror. Vel'kor's strike force took the fortress at substantial cost and recovered the Blade. The chapter's Reclusiarch council inspected the Blade upon return; the inspection concluded that the Blade had not been used by Iron Warriors during their possession, and that the forge-flame had remained intact throughout the six-hundred-year period. The chapter took this as evidence that the Blade had specifically refused to serve Chaos forces.

In Battle

The Ardent Blade has, since Vel'kor's recovery, been wielded by a sequence of Salamanders Captains in active combat across the post-Heresy era. The Blade's combat behaviour is, by the chapter's standard record, consistent with Heresy-era specifications: it functions as a heavy power-sword of slightly elevated mass, with the forge-flame providing additional damage against warp-influenced enemies. The forge-flame's intensity varies in active combat, intensifying against daemons, sorcerers, and possessed Astartes, while dimming in conventional combat. The pattern is the same as the Spear of Telesto's behaviour, which the chapter takes as evidence of a common forge-tradition origin.

The Blade's specific kill-count, since Vel'kor's recovery, includes a confirmed Bloodthirster (in 712.M37, in a Black Templars-coordinated Eye of Terror engagement), three Word Bearers Champions (across the post-Heresy era), several daemon-prince lieutenants, and an undocumented but large number of cultists and lesser daemons. The Blade has not been used to kill any non-Chaos opponent in its post-recovery service — a pattern the chapter considers evidentiary of the Blade's specific theological inclination.

The Modern Wielder

The Ardent Blade is, in the Indomitus era, the personal weapon of the Salamanders Captain Va'lyn — a current Captain who serves as the chapter's senior officer in the chapter's Cretacia-region defensive operations. Va'lyn has wielded the Blade since 015.M42, when his predecessor — Captain Aurion — was killed during a Salamanders engagement against a Khornate cult outbreak on the Salamanders successor-chapter world of Pyrric. Aurion's death is documented; the chapter's record describes him as having killed three cult Champions before falling to a Bloodthirster.

Va'lyn has wielded the Blade in eleven documented Indomitus-era engagements. The forge-flame's behaviour has, by Va'lyn's quarterly chapter reports, remained consistent with pre-Indomitus specifications. Va'lyn has not, by his own report, formed the personal-affective bond with the Blade that some previous wielders have described in the chapter's hagiographic records; he treats the Blade as a chapter asset rather than as a personal possession. The chapter's Reclusiarch council has noted Va'lyn's approach in their classified internal records without commenting on whether the approach is preferable or not.
