Hades Hive

Yarrick came up through the Schola Progenium and the Commissariat the conventional way. He was already old when the Second War for Armageddon began in 941.M41 — a senior Commissar whose career-long competence had earned him commands and a vox-channel reputation but no battlefield legend.

The Battle of Hades Hive changed that. Yarrick organised the defence of one of Armageddon's primary industrial hives against the lead WAAAGH! wave under Warlord Ugulhard, lost his arm to a krak grenade mid-engagement, and personally killed Ugulhard with the Warlord's own power klaw — which he then had the Steel Legion's field-medicae fit to his stump as a battlefield prosthesis. He kept the klaw. Orks called him the Old One. They feared him by name.

I am still here. I will be here when you are not.

— Yarrick, attributed Second War

The Long Service

Between the Second and Third Wars for Armageddon, Yarrick aged with extraordinary slowness — by all accounts, slower than mortal biology should have permitted. The Adeptus Astra Telepathica investigated and produced inconclusive reports. The Inquisition opened a quiet file and never closed it.

He served on Armageddon, in retirement, as a one-man recruitment poster. When Ghazghkull returned in 998.M41, Yarrick was waiting for him.

The Third War

Yarrick coordinated the ground defence of Armageddon through the Third War — the largest mobilisation of Astartes since the Heresy, with dozens of Space Marine chapters reinforcing the Steel Legion regiments. He was, by then, an institution that the wider Imperial Command treated as a fixture rather than an officer with a finite tour.

He survived the Third War. He vanished after it.

Status in M42

Yarrick has not been officially seen since the close of the Third War for Armageddon in late M41. He is presumed dead, missing, or — in the more nervous Imperial intelligence files — still walking somewhere on Armageddon, waiting for Ghazghkull's Fourth War.

Ghazghkull, when interrogated through ork prisoner channels, refuses to confirm Yarrick's death. Orks consider unsettled scores to be the most important kind.

The Old One walks. Da Beast knows. Da Beast waits.

The Hades Hive Defence

Sebastian Yarrick was a Commissar attached to the Imperial Guard's Armageddon Steel Legion when Ghazghkull's Second War for Armageddon engagement began in 941.M41. He was specifically deployed to Hades Hive — the primary engagement target of the WAAAGH!'s ground assault — and was personally responsible for the Hive's command coordination during the engagement's worst phase. The defence held for approximately ninety-three days; Yarrick personally killed approximately seventeen Ork senior commanders during the engagement.

The defence's specific operational legacy is the Yarrick combat doctrine — a sustained Commissar-led defensive doctrine that emphasises sustained position-holding, sustained morale management, and sustained personal Commissar-engagement against enemy senior commanders. The doctrine has been codified into Imperial Guard institutional training materials and has been applied across approximately forty subsequent Imperial Guard defensive engagements with documented operational success.

The Personal Combat With Ghazghkull

Yarrick personally engaged Ghazghkull in single combat three documented times — once at the Hades Hive engagement's final phase in 941.M41, once during the Third War for Armageddon in 998.M41, and once at the post-Third-War Armageddon reconsolidation operations in 002.M42. The engagements have been operationally indecisive; neither combatant has killed the other across the three documented engagements.

The three engagements have shaped Ghazghkull's specific operational doctrine more than the Imperial Cult has publicly acknowledged. Ghazghkull's classified WAAAGH! internal correspondence (recovered by Imperial Inquisitorial operations in 023.M42) indicates that Ghazghkull considers Yarrick the only mortal Imperial commander whose specific operational capability he has been operationally unable to predict. The assessment has shaped Ghazghkull's specific Imperial Cult engagement patterns across the post-Third-War period.

Three engagements. Neither of us dead. I will see him a fourth time.

— Sebastian Yarrick, last documented statement, 002.M42

M42 Status — The Returning

Yarrick's specific M42-era status has been the subject of approximately fifteen Imperial Cult classified intelligence assessments. The assessments have produced inconsistent results. The most-recent assessment (from 030.M42) classifies Yarrick as "operationally missing in action since 002.M42 — last documented presence at Armageddon's reconsolidation operations." Subsequent reports of Yarrick-sightings have been classified as unverified.

The Imperial Cult's working theological position is that Yarrick's specific operational status is "in the manner of Saint Celestine — translated to a spiritual existence under conditions the Imperial Cult does not need to fully comprehend." The Armageddon Steel Legion has continued to deploy under Yarrick's specific operational doctrines; the doctrine's continued operational productivity is read by the Legion as theological evidence of Yarrick's specific sustained operational presence. The Inquisition has not contradicted the reading.
