The Captain-General
Trajann Valoris is the current Captain-General of the Adeptus Custodes — the senior officer of the Emperor's personal bodyguard and, by ancient ceremonial protocol, the Imperial figure who answers only to the Emperor himself. He took the position in M41 after his predecessor's long, quiet tenure.
Like all Custodes he is unique — individually gene-crafted by the Emperor rather than mass-produced from a primarch's template. He is, by Custodes physiological measure, in the top order of single-combat capacity of any Custodian currently active. The Companions consider him the foremost duellist of the modern Ten Thousand.
The Emperor decreed silence. The Emperor decreed protocol. The Emperor also decreed that protocol may be set aside.

The Release
Valoris's defining act was the invocation, in 999.M41, of an ancient protocol — written by the Emperor Himself in M30, sealed away since the Scouring — that permitted the Custodes to leave Terra and fight across the galaxy. The Companions had remained inside the Imperial Palace for ten thousand years. Valoris's decision broke that vigil.
The decision was, by every analysis, his alone to make. No High Lord had the authority to overrule it. No Inquisitor had the standing. The Companions accepted his interpretation of the Emperor's will.
Operations
Since the Release, Valoris has personally fought on Cadia during the late stages of the 13th Black Crusade, in the Webway near the Throne against daemonic incursions, on Macragge in coordination with Guilliman, and on the Sanctus Wall fortifications. His battle-record in the period exceeds, by Custodes count, any previous Captain-General's field-engagement total.
He carries the Watcher's Axe — the office's ancient weapon — and the Castellan Spear when on active deployment.
M42
Valoris coordinates Custodes operations across the galaxy from a small mobile command-formation rather than a fixed headquarters. He defers to Guilliman in coordinated Crusade operations but maintains Custodes independence as a matter of doctrine.
With the High Lords reduced in influence following the Era Indomitus restructuring, Valoris is — by quiet Imperial assessment — among the three or four most powerful individuals in the Imperium currently active.
