The First Kiss

Every Genestealer Cult begins with a Patriarch — a Purestrain Genestealer of unusual size and age, one of the original infiltration-bioform individuals seeded by a passing Tyranid Hive Fleet. The Patriarch arrives on a target world alone, generally in a stealth-pod injection, and uses its four-armed claws and chitinous bulk to subdue an initial host.

The host receives the Kiss — a needle-organ injection of Genestealer genetic material that begins the slow transformation of the host's offspring into Hybrids. The cult builds out from this single infected lineage. The Patriarch retreats into the deep underhive or equivalent hidden environment and conducts the cult's long-term operations from there.

I am the Father. The Stars Children are coming for us all.

— Cult Patriarch broadcast, attributed Hive Tertium 998.M41

The Anchor

The Patriarch is the cult's psychic anchor. Every Hybrid in the cult — from the third-generation Acolytes to the most human-looking Neophytes to the Magus, the Primus, and the Iconward — shares a psychic link with the Patriarch. The link transmits the Patriarch's instructions, projects the cult's collective psychic resonance toward the eventual Hive Fleet, and (when the cult activates) coordinates the Day of Ascension uprising.

The Patriarch does not generally appear in public until that uprising. Its presence is rumoured, theorised, anticipated — but rarely confirmed until the day the Hive Fleet arrives.

The Day

The Day of Ascension is the cult's climax. The Hybrids rise in coordinated insurrection across the infected world. The Patriarch emerges from hiding to lead the central uprising forces. The cult's psychic resonance, peaking, broadcasts a beacon into the warp that draws the parent Hive Fleet to the target.

The Hive Fleet arrives and consumes everything — including, in most cases, the Patriarch and the entire cult that has been laboring for generations to summon it. The Patriarch dies. The cult dies. The Hive Mind grows. The cycle continues elsewhere.

M42

The Patriarch type-figure has been active in numerous M41-M42 cult uprisings. Imperial Inquisition pathology files contain partial records of dozens of Patriarchs killed in successive cult elimination operations. Each killed Patriarch is a closed case; each unsuppressed cult is another active Patriarch somewhere.

The Inquisition's standing doctrine is that Patriarch identification is the highest single-target priority in any GSC investigation. The doctrine is correct. The execution is, by available statistics, unable to keep pace with the rate at which new Patriarchs seed across the Imperium.
