The Recurring Carnifex

Old One Eye is the modern Imperial designation for a specific Carnifex bioform — the heavy-assault Tyranid bioform that the Hive Mind has, by every available pathological measure, grown and regrown more times than any other named Tyranid creature on Imperial record.

The original Carnifex was identified during a Catachan campaign in the late M41. It was killed. The Hive Mind subsequently grew an identical Carnifex with the same lost-eye scar pattern and identical pheromone-signature. That Carnifex was also killed. The pattern has repeated, at Imperial last count, perhaps a dozen times.

It has the same scar. The same eye missing. It is the same creature. We do not know what that means.

— Catachan field-survey, attributed M41

The Adaptation

Each regrown Old One Eye is, by Imperial pathological measure, more cunning than the previous incarnation. The bioform has learned to avoid the specific traps that killed the previous version. It has learned to attack from different angles. It has learned, by the most recent encounters, to disengage and retreat when Imperial firepower density passes certain thresholds — a behaviour Carnifexes generally do not exhibit.

The pattern suggests the Hive Mind is using Old One Eye as a kind of long-term learning instrument: a single recurring bioform whose accumulating combat experience is folded back into the broader Tyranid gene-record.

The Hunters

The Catachan Jungle Fighters consider Old One Eye a regimental project. The 2nd Catachan Regiment in particular has been the primary engagement force in multiple Old One Eye encounters; their veteran officers have personal grudges that go back generations. The current Catachan field-doctrine for engaging the bioform is specifically tailored to its known regenerated behaviours.

No encounter has yet produced a permanent kill. The current Imperial intelligence estimate is that Old One Eye will continue to return until either the parent Hive Fleet is exterminated or the Hive Mind decides the learning project has concluded.

M42

Old One Eye has been seen in at least two Indomitus Era engagements — both, characteristically, against Catachan-led forces in jungle deployment zones. Both engagements ended with the bioform killed and the Imperial force taking sufficient casualties that the engagement is treated as a draw.

The Catachan command keeps the regimental count of Old One Eye kills on a tally-board at their main forge depot. The current count is sixteen.
