Hades Hive

Brother Calistarius was a Codicier-Librarian of the Blood Angels deployed to Armageddon during the Second War. At Hades Hive he led a small detachment that was buried alive beneath collapsed orbital fire and pinned for seven days in the ruins. Some time during those seven days the Black Rage took him.

The Black Rage — the gene-curse that floods a Blood Angel with Sanguinius's final memories — is, by every Blood Angel record, unrecoverable. Once a brother enters the Rage he is committed to the Death Company and dies in the next engagement.

Calistarius emerged from the rubble alive, sane, and other.

The Lord of Death

What Mephiston is, in physiological terms, the chapter's Apothecaries have spent the subsequent millennium trying to determine. He is faster than he was as Calistarius. He is stronger. He no longer ages on a measurable scale. His psychic powers, modest before the burial, are now of an order that places him among the most powerful loyalist psykers in the Imperium.

He is also, the Apothecaries note quietly, no longer subject to the Red Thirst — at least not in the way other Blood Angels are. He has, by some mechanism nobody has reproduced, walked back from the Rage.

I have walked through the Rage and back. There is a path. I have not found it yet.

— Mephiston, attributed

The Watch

The chapter watches Mephiston carefully. He is the only Blood Angel to have done what he did, and the apothecaries study his gene-seed with the careful hope of finding the cure that Sanguinius's line has hunted for ten thousand years. So far they have found a result and not a method.

The Inquisition has, at Mephiston's presence on several engagements, opened files. Each has been quietly closed by Dante's intervention.

Modern Service

Mephiston serves as Chief Librarian of the Blood Angels. He fights at Dante's side on the most critical engagements. He wears red plate, carries the force sword Vitarus, and is given a wide latitude by Dante because the alternative — being denied that latitude — has historically produced no good outcome.

He is, by general Blood Angels consensus, the only living member of the chapter for whom no one has the next thousand years' service contract written.

The Transformation

Mephiston was not always the Lord of Death. He was Calistarius, a Codicier of the Blood Angels, when he was buried alive under collapsing hive-rubble during the Second Battle of Armageddon in 941.M41. The chapter's recovery teams found his armour signal three days later; what came out of the rubble had walked through a sustained Black Rage and returned. He had defeated the Rage without succumbing to the Death Company — the only Blood Angel ever recorded to do so.

He took the name Mephiston because Calistarius had died in the rubble. The Sanguinary High Priest's classified medical examination found that his bio-chemistry had shifted permanently: psyker capability tripled, biological aging slowed by approximately 80%, and the Sanguinary Curse markers that defined Blood Angel gene-seed instability had become inactive. The chapter does not know how. They have stopped asking.

The Library Mantle

Mephiston became Chief Librarian of the Blood Angels in 945.M41 — a post he has held continuously for over a century. The Blood Angels Librarius operates under his direct command from the Tower of Amareo on Baal, where he keeps the chapter's prophetic and warp-related records personally. He has trained every senior Librarian the chapter has produced since his ascension; the chapter's psychic doctrine bears his specific imprint.

His Librarius doctrine is unusual. Mephiston rejects the standard Imperial Astartes psyker doctrine that emphasises emotional suppression; he teaches instead that the psyker must understand and accept his own Rage in order to wield it. The teaching is controversial. The Grey Knights have, in classified correspondence, requested a formal Inquisitorial review of the doctrine. The review was declined by the Sanguinary High Priest. The doctrine continues.

M42 Status

Mephiston fought at the Baal Crusade alongside Commander Dante during the worst phase of Hive Fleet Leviathan's assault. He personally killed a confirmed Hive Tyrant in single combat during the Tower of Amareo's last-stand defence; the kill is recorded in the chapter's annals as the most-decisive single Librarius engagement of the Crusade. He survived without significant injury despite engaging the Tyrant with only a force-sword and his bare psychic capability.

His post-Indomitus operational priority has been the chapter's Primaris integration. Mephiston has overseen the gene-seed adjustment work that allowed the new Primaris recruits to be safely incorporated without amplifying the chapter's Sanguinary Curse risk. The work is ongoing. By his classified report to Dante, "the Curse cannot be removed from the gene-line, but it can be taught to wait."

The Curse cannot be removed from the gene-line. But it can be taught to wait.

— Mephiston, classified report to Dante
