Persona
Logan Grimnar
Great Wolf of the Space Wolves · The Old Wolf · Master of Fenris
LOYALIST
The Old Wolf
Logan Grimnar rose through the Space Wolves the same way every Wolf Lord rises: by saga-deed, by survival in the kind of engagements that kill most aspirants, and by being the brother his Great Company chose to follow when the question came up. He took a Wolf Lordship in 415.M41 and was elected Great Wolf — the senior of the twelve — twenty-five years later.
He has held the position for over five centuries. By Astartes standards he is in his prime. By Fenrisian standards he is an old man whose grandchildren's grandchildren have died of age. Both perspectives are true and both are accurate.
The Long Argument
Grimnar's tenure has been defined by his refusal to defer to Imperial authority on matters he considers a Chapter Master's privilege. He famously refused an Inquisitorial order to censure Yarrick's defence of Armageddon in the Second War, on the grounds that Yarrick was correct and the Inquisitor was not. The Inquisition reopened the file. Grimnar declined to attend the hearing. The matter was, eventually, dropped.
Similar incidents recur across his career. He is, by Imperial Senate measure, the most institutionally difficult loyalist Chapter Master alive. He is also the one who has, by quiet count, accepted more impossible postings than any other.
I am a wolf. I am the Emperor's wolf. I am not a hound.
— Logan Grimnar, attributed to an Inquisitor
The Stormrider
Grimnar rides into battle on the Stormrider — a flying chariot pulled by two harnessed Thunderwolves, the great beast-companions only Space Wolves Wolf Lords command in significant numbers. He wields the Axe Morkai, a two-handed Frost Axe whose blade has been re-edged by every Iron Priest who has served under him.
In battle he leads from the front, a habit older Astartes Chapter Masters generally lose. He has not lost it.
M42
Grimnar has been an awkward fit with the Indomitus Era. He accepts Primaris reinforcement reluctantly. He has voiced disagreement with Cawl's programme more than once. He cooperates with Guilliman because Guilliman is the primarch he was raised to serve under, and because the Chapter's pragmatic faction outvoted his preferences. The disagreement is not yet resolved.
He waits, as the Chapter has always waited, for Russ.
