The Eighth Captain

Kharn was the World Eaters' Eighth Captain during the Great Crusade and remained at Angron's side through the Heresy. The Butcher's Nails — the cortical implants that gave the World Eaters their characteristic rage — were as deep in him as in any of his brothers, and his self-control had always been measured in increments rather than absolutes.

During the Crusade he was, by Crusade-era reckoning, a competent commander. The Nails were quieter then.

Skalathrax

The defining moment of Kharn's ten-thousand-year career was the engagement at Skalathrax, late in the Horus Heresy. The World Eaters fought their fellow traitors the Emperor's Children for control of the planet. Winter set in. The Emperor's Children retreated indoors. So did most of the World Eaters.

Kharn refused. When his own brothers declared the battle paused for the season, he killed them — burned out the World Eaters' encampment and slaughtered the brothers who refused to keep fighting. The Emperor's Children he then hunted to extinction across the cooling city.

The surviving World Eaters named him the Betrayer. He accepted the name. Khorne, watching, accepted him.

If you will not fight, you are already dead. I am only completing the work.

— Kharn, attributed Skalathrax

Gorechild

Kharn carries the chainaxe Gorechild — once Angron's own weapon, gifted to Kharn by his primarch on the eve of the Heresy. The axe has tasted the blood of every World Eaters loyalist Kharn ever cut down, every Emperor's Children at Skalathrax, and every Imperial soldier in the ten thousand years since.

Gorechild speaks. So does Khorne. Both voices speak in Kharn's skull constantly. He has not, by any reliable account, slept since the Heresy.

M42

Kharn appears in the M42 record more often than any other Heresy-era traitor Astartes — every Khornate warband he encounters either follows him or dies, and the proportion of followers to corpses has been slowly increasing as the Era Indomitus progresses.

He leads no formal force. He simply walks into ongoing engagements and accelerates them past any conventional battle-line into the kind of slaughter Khorne prefers. The Imperial War Office classifies his appearance in any zone as a flag-event requiring full Astartes intervention.
