The Custodian

Azrael holds the Dark Angels' deepest secret in its entirety. He is the sole brother of the chapter who knows the full circumstances of the Fall of Caliban, the full identity-record of every named Fallen, and the full sequence of obligations the chapter has accepted in the ten thousand years since.

He inherited the burden from his predecessor and will pass it to his successor when the position next changes hands. The transfer ritual is conducted privately. Even the chapter's Interrogator-Chaplains do not witness it.

The Lion Helm

Azrael wears the Lion Helm — the chapter's most senior relic, a power-helmet of pre-Heresy Caliban manufacture. The Helm projects an iron-halo-equivalent personal field that has, by Apothecary record, absorbed projectile and energy strikes that would have ended any lesser officer. It also reportedly grants the wearer some psychic resonance with the Lion himself.

Now that the Lion has returned in M42, the resonance has reportedly become a steady channel rather than an occasional ping. Azrael has not commented publicly on whether he speaks with his primarch on a regular basis. The chapter's mid-rank brothers assume the answer is yes.

The Chapter's secret is mine to carry. I will pass it intact. I will not pass it cleansed.

— Azrael, attributed accession

The Sword of Secrets

Azrael also carries the Sword of Secrets — a power-sword whose decorative engraving is the actual partial-text of the chapter's most damning confession. The text is, by chapter doctrine, illegible to any Astartes below Inner Circle rank. The sword is not used in conventional engagements; it is drawn only against enemies the chapter has formally judged.

The Watcher in the Dark — a small, hooded, robed creature of obscure origin — accompanies Azrael into battle. The Watchers were the keepers of the Lion's stasis-sleep. Azrael does not explain the relationship.

M42

Azrael coordinated the Dark Angels' role in the Indomitus Crusade and has been notably quiet since the Lion's return. The chapter is conducting operations Azrael has not explained to either the Inquisition or to fellow Chapter Masters. Both parties have learned to stop asking.

The hunt for the Fallen continues. So does whatever else the Lion has now decided to do.

The Supreme Grand Master

Azrael has held the Dark Angels' Supreme Grand Master position continuously since approximately 887.M41 — a tenure of over one hundred Terran years that is, by Dark Angels chapter records, the third-longest in the chapter's post-Heresy institutional history. He was selected by the Inner Circle following the death of the previous Supreme Grand Master Tion Vraxa, who fell during a Fallen-recovery operation in the eastern fringe sectors.

Azrael's pre-Supreme-Grand-Master career had included service as the chapter's Master of the Ravenwing for approximately fifty years (the Ravenwing being the chapter's specialised mobile-cavalry sub-formation responsible for sustained Fallen-pursuit operations). The Ravenwing tenure had established Azrael's specific reputation as a sustained-operationally-competent Fallen-hunter — a reputation that the Inner Circle's specific selection process operationally privileged.

The Lion Helm Specifics

The Lion Helm — Azrael's specific personal helm, said by chapter tradition to contain a fragment of Lion El'Jonson's specific psychic-and-theological essence — has been the Dark Angels Supreme Grand Master's specific personal artefact for approximately ten thousand Terran years. The Helm's specific operational properties include sustained psychic-shielding of the wearer's identity from external psychic detection, sustained operational-decision enhancement under combat conditions, and what the chapter classifies as "the Lion's specific operational presence" during sustained engagement scenarios.

The Helm's specific operational mechanism has been the subject of approximately seven Adeptus Mechanicus classified internal investigations across the post-Heresy era. The investigations have not produced operational understanding of the mechanism. The chapter's specific operational position is that the mechanism is theological rather than mechanical; the Helm's operational properties are sustained-derived from Lion El'Jonson's specific personal essence rather than from any sustained operational engineering. The Lion's M42-era return has not modified the Helm's specific operational properties.

M42 Coordination With the Lion

Azrael has, since Lion El'Jonson's M42-era return, coordinated the chapter's specific operational direction with the Lion through a sustained personal communication arrangement. The arrangement is unusual; the Dark Angels' specific institutional structure had not previously included a sustained primarch-Supreme-Grand-Master coordination framework, and the chapter's specific operational doctrine had been calibrated to operate without sustained primarch coordination across the post-Heresy era.

The coordination has produced specific operational adjustments to the chapter's Fallen-hunt arrangements. Azrael has, in classified internal correspondence with the Lion, requested operational guidance on specific Fallen-recovery cases that the Lion's specific personal knowledge would be operationally useful for; the Lion has provided guidance on approximately seventeen specific cases since his return. The guidance has been operationally productive. The chapter's specific Fallen-recovery operational tempo has accelerated by approximately 30% across the post-Lion-return period.

The Lion returned. The chapter's questions did not. We continue to ask them through him.
