The Method

Asmodai's work is the interrogation of captured Fallen — the Dark Angels brothers who sided with Luther at Caliban's fall and have been hunted, captured, and brought to the Rock's subterranean cells in ones and twos for ten thousand years. Each prisoner is the property of the Interrogator-Chaplain assigned to him until repentance or death; Asmodai inherits a higher than usual proportion of the most difficult cases.

His methods are documented only in the Inner Circle's sealed records. They are, by every account, comprehensive.

Repent! For tomorrow you die.

— Asmodai, attributed (universal Interrogator-Chaplain refrain)

The Two Who Repented

In Asmodai's long career, only two Fallen have ever repented under his interrogation. The names of both are sealed in the Inner Circle's archive. The dates are documented; the substance of the repentances is not. Both prisoners were granted final-rite execution and ritual cremation, their gene-seed harvested and returned to the chapter for reuse.

The rate is treated by the chapter as the measure of Asmodai's standards rather than as an indictment of his method. Most Fallen are, by long observation, beyond conversion. Asmodai is simply the brother most willing to ascertain that finally.

Outside the Cells

In Astartes engagements Asmodai serves as the chapter's senior battlefield Chaplain — leading sermons before deployment, exhorting battle-brothers under fire, applying the Crozius arcanum to enemy infantry and command staff alike. He is, by chapter custom, exempt from peacetime social obligations because nobody enjoys his company.

He accepts this assessment. He has not, in any record, contested it.

M42

Asmodai's workload has not lessened in the Indomitus Era. The Era's general acceleration of Imperial engagement has produced more captured Fallen than the chapter's normal cadence accommodates. He works longer hours. The Inner Circle's prisoner-rotation schedule prioritises his cells.

The Lion's return has not, by any visible measure, changed Asmodai's method. He continues.

The Apprenticeship

Asmodai was trained by Interrogator-Chaplain Cavadon from 762.M41 to 803.M41 — forty-one years of apprenticeship that included direct participation in approximately fifteen Fallen recovery operations. Cavadon had been the Dark Angels' Interrogator-Chaplain for one hundred and twelve years at the start of the apprenticeship; he had inscribed approximately seventy names on the Sword of Secrets during his tenure. He selected Asmodai specifically because of Asmodai's documented inability to feel personal sympathy for any Fallen prisoner — a trait Cavadon classified as essential for the role.

The selection produced friction within the chapter. Asmodai's pre-apprenticeship reputation had been as a particularly harsh chaplain even by Dark Angels standards. The Chapter Master at the time, Naberius, had opposed the selection on the grounds that Asmodai's specific temperament would produce excessive prisoner mortality during interrogation. The opposition was overruled. The mortality rate during Asmodai's interrogations has indeed been higher than the chapter's historical average.

The Lion's Inspection

Asmodai has, since Lion El'Jonson's return in M42, declined to formally request the Lion's review of the Sword of Secrets' inscribed names. The decline has been classified internally as a deferral rather than a refusal; Asmodai's reasoning, per his classified report, is that the Lion's review would produce one of two outcomes — endorsement of every name (which would commit the Lion politically to the chapter's specific Fallen-hunting doctrine) or revision of specific names (which would invalidate centuries of chapter operations). Neither outcome serves the chapter.

The Lion has, by chapter record, not requested the inspection himself. The deferral has held since 040.M42. Asmodai has continued to inscribe new names — six since the Lion's return. The Lion has been present in the chamber during three of the six inscriptions and has not commented. The chapter reads the silence as approval; Asmodai reads it as neutral observation. Both readings are sustained.
