Altansar

Maugan Ra was a Dark Reaper of Craftworld Altansar — a Craftworld that was, in late M30, swept up in the Eye of Terror's emergence and lost behind the warp-storm boundary for ten thousand years. By every Craftworld record, the entire Altansar population perished or fell to Chaos.

Maugan Ra alone survived. How he did is the central mystery of his Aspect. He has not, in any subsequent millennium, explained.

The Dark Reapers

The Dark Reapers are the heavy-weapons Aspect — Aspect Warriors trained as the embodiment of death at range. They wear matte-black armour, carry the Reaper Launcher (a long-barrelled missile weapon designed to defeat Astartes-grade armour), and operate with the patience of professional assassins.

Maugan Ra carries the Maugetar — the Harvester — a weapon that combines reaper cannon, force scythe, and (Aeldari accounts suggest) some psychic-feedback element that draws strength from each soul taken. The weapon is unique to him. No other Aspect Warrior has been permitted to copy its design.

I have buried my people. The harvest is not yet done.

— Maugan Ra, attributed Altansar's return

The Return of Altansar

In 871.M41, Maugan Ra completed what he had been working toward for ten thousand years. He led an Aeldari operational expedition into the Eye of Terror's outer warp-currents and successfully extracted Craftworld Altansar from the Eye's gravitational pull. The Craftworld emerged with approximately 18% of its pre-loss population still alive — survivors who had spent ten millennia in a sustained warp-temporal anomaly that had compressed the subjective experience to approximately seventy years.

The extraction is the singular Phoenix Lord operational achievement of the post-Heresy era. The other Craftworlds accepted Altansar back into the broader Aeldari political community immediately; the recovered Aeldari population, however, has remained psychologically and culturally marked by their time in the Eye. They are operationally reliable but culturally separate. Maugan Ra spends most of his time on Altansar now, supervising the Craftworld's slow reintegration.

M42

Maugan Ra has been active throughout the Era Indomitus. He has fought alongside Imperial forces, on at least one documented occasion, when the alternative was Chaos taking a strategic position. The Imperial after-action report — sealed in Inquisitorial archives — describes a black-armoured Aeldari warrior who shot daemon-princes through the eyes from impossible ranges and then walked away without speaking.

Pre-Altansar Origin

Maugan Ra is the only Phoenix Lord whose Craftworld of origin is known to have been destroyed during the post-Fall era. He was a senior Aspect Warrior on Craftworld Altansar when the Craftworld drifted too close to the Eye of Terror's outer warp-currents during the Eye's Heresy-era expansion. Altansar disappeared into the Eye in approximately 020.M31; Maugan Ra was offworld at the time, conducting a Dark Reaper deployment in a neighbouring Aeldari operational region.

The loss defined him. Maugan Ra spent the next ten millennia attempting to locate Altansar — every Dark Reaper engagement he personally led during the post-Heresy era was calibrated around intelligence-gathering that might bring him closer to his lost Craftworld. The other Phoenix Lords tolerated the singular focus; Asurmen himself reportedly told the Farseer council that "Maugan Ra mourns; let him mourn in motion."

Let him mourn in motion.

— Asurmen on Maugan Ra, recorded in classified Farseer council notes

Dark Reaper Shrine

Maugan Ra's aspect is the Dark Reaper — the Aspect Warrior discipline specialised in heavy ranged-fire and anti-vehicle engagement. Dark Reapers wear distinctive dark armour with skull-iconography helmets and carry the Reaper launcher: a heavy multi-missile launcher capable of engaging targets from infantry to light vehicles. Their tactical role is fire-support from prepared positions, supplementing the closer-range Aspect Warriors during sustained engagements.

The Shrine maintains its primary house on Iyanden, with substantial subordinate houses on Saim-Hann and Ulthwé. Dark Reapers form the smallest Aspect Warrior cohort across the surviving Aeldari population (approximately 8% of active Aspect Warriors) — the discipline's psychological severity and the Reaper launcher's specific operational requirements limit recruitment. Maugan Ra has personally trained every senior Iyanden Dark Reaper Exarch.

M42 Operational Pattern

Maugan Ra's Indomitus-era operations have shifted from the Altansar-recovery focus to broader Aeldari defensive engagement. The Cicatrix Maledictum's effects have rendered Altansar's outer-Eye position more dangerous than during the pre-Rift era; Maugan Ra has dedicated his recent campaign tempo to keeping the Craftworld viable while broader Aeldari operations stabilise around the Rift's effects.

The Indomitus-era Dark Reaper Shrine has expanded its recruitment in response to Maugan Ra's increased operational tempo. The Shrine's training capacity has, by Iyanden's working records, approximately doubled since 002.M42. Maugan Ra himself has appeared in eleven confirmed Imperial engagements since the Rift opened, primarily in defensive coordination operations with Iyanden's Wraithlord council during sustained Tyranid splinter-fleet engagements in the eastern fringe.
