Catachan the World
Catachan is a planet that actively despises human life. It is a feral death world where every plant, animal, and breath of air is a lethal threat. The Brainleaf plant can control a human mind, the Catachan Barking Toad can level a city block with poison gas when startled, and the Catachan Devil—a massive predatory centipede—hunts in the shadows.
Growing up on Catachan is the most brutal filtration process in the Imperium. Half of all children die before they learn to walk. Those who reach adulthood are practically forged in pure adrenaline and muscle. They are the unintended perfect raw material for the Astra Militarum.
The Survivor's Edge
A Catachan regiment does not march in neat columns. They look less like an Imperial army and more like a heavily armed barbarian horde. They eschew heavy carapace armor, preferring red bandanas, bare muscular arms, and combat vests. In the sweltering heat of a jungle, armor only cooks you; mobility is survival.
They carry the Catachan Fang, an oversized combat knife that is treated less like a tool and more like a sacred heirloom. A Catachan respects their knife more than they respect their commanding officers.
Doctrine of the Knife
Their combat doctrine is simple: ambush, guerrilla warfare, and close-quarters savagery. They set booby traps that can disable armored columns. They slip through dense undergrowth unseen, emerging behind enemy lines to slit throats and vanish before the bodies hit the mud.
Catachans despise standard Imperial tactics. Stood in a line to exchange volley fire? That's how you get shot. They prefer the night, the mud, and the element of brutal surprise.
Notable Regiments
The 2nd Catachan, known as the 'Catachan Devils', are legendary for their guerrilla campaigns. Sergeant 'Stonetooth' Harker, a man so massive he carries a heavy bolter like a standard rifle, embodies the spirit of the world. Sly Marbo, a solitary operative, is said to have wiped out entire enemy encampments with only a knife and an explosive charge.
When Orks or Tyranids infest a jungle world, the Imperium does not send armor. They drop the Catachans and wait for the screaming to stop.
A Soldier Who Does Not Salute
Discipline within a Catachan regiment is informal. They do not salute polished brass; they follow whoever has the biggest knife and the most survival sense. Officious Commissars sent to enforce standard discipline often suffer 'tragic accidents' on their first patrol in the jungle.
They are rough, insubordinate, and foul-mouthed. But when the green hell closes in, and the shadows come alive with claws, there is no one else the Imperium would rather have holding the line.
You call this a death world? Back home we call this a garden.
