Iron Warriors
Sons of Olympia · The Unbroken · Masters of Siege
TRAITOR · CHAOS UNDIVIDED
The Grudge
The Iron Warriors did the grinding work of the Crusade. Where Dorn built fortresses for glory and Sanguinius won field battles for inspirational record, the Iron Warriors besieged the worlds nobody else could crack, took staggering casualties, and were rewarded with the next equally unsightly siege.
Perturabo carried the grievance for decades. The Legion shared it. When Horus turned, the Iron Warriors followed without much hesitation — they had been waiting to be asked.
Olympia Burns
The single act that completed the Iron Warriors' moral fall was Perturabo's destruction of Olympia. While the Legion was on Crusade, Olympia revolted; Perturabo returned home and ordered the Legion to put down the revolt with no mercy. Most of the planet died at his Legion's hands.
After Olympia there was nothing left to defect to in moral terms. The Iron Warriors completed their commitment to Horus and the Heresy with the dead-soul-eyed thoroughness of men who no longer had a home worth disagreeing about.
Iron within, iron without.
— Iron Warriors motto
The Siege Specialists
The Iron Warriors are the galaxy's foremost siege specialists. They have refined siegecraft into a doctrinal art across ten thousand years and have brought down fortifications that the Imperium considered impregnable. Chaos warlords who need a specific stronghold cracked pay the Iron Warriors' fees because the alternative — sending Khornate berserkers at a fortified wall — does not work.
They field heavy artillery, Obliterators, Warpsmiths who maintain extensive Chaos vehicle pools, and Forgefiends. Their siege doctrine is patient, attritional, and ruthless about troop losses.
Medrengard
The Iron Warriors rule Medrengard, a daemon-world in the Eye of Terror whose surface is a continent-spanning network of cyclopean fortresses Perturabo built mostly for the satisfaction of breaking them. The fortresses serve no defensive purpose. They exist to be assaulted, taken, rebuilt, and assaulted again as training and as ritual.
In the Era Indomitus Perturabo has been active in the Arks of Omen campaign, lending his siege expertise to Abaddon's drive for pre-Imperial Blackstone technology.
Perturabo Before Olympia
Perturabo's pre-Olympia operational position was that of a sustained military-engineering apprentice on the world of Olympia, where Perturabo had been raised under supervision following his Crusade-era retrieval-pod arrival. Olympia's specific cultural-and-political character had emphasised sustained military-engineering tradition; Perturabo's training had been the world's institutional engineering apprenticeship, conducted across approximately fifteen Terran-equivalent Olympian years.
Perturabo's character was shaped by frustration with the Olympian institutional arrangement's limitations. The Olympian institutional arrangement had been hierarchical in ways that Perturabo's capability exceeded; Perturabo had progressively become responsible for the Olympian institutional arrangement's outcomes while remaining institutionally subordinate to the arrangement's specific senior operational positions. The frustration had been the operational basis of Perturabo's specific Heresy-era operational alignment with Horus.
The Sack of Olympia
The Iron Warriors Legion's engagement against Olympia in approximately 008.M31 — the so-called Sack of Olympia — was engineered by Perturabo as retaliation against Olympia's specific institutional arrangement following the institutional arrangement's decisions to challenge Perturabo's primarch-derived operational authority. The Sack's outcomes included the operational destruction of approximately ninety percent of Olympia's sustained population, the operational destruction of Olympia's sustained institutional arrangement, and the operational dispersal of Olympia's surviving population across the broader Imperial Cult-controlled galactic region.
The Sack's consequences for the Iron Warriors Legion have been sustained-institutional. The Legion's doctrine has, since the Sack, emphasised continued action against any sustained institutional arrangement that challenges the Legion's primarch-derived operational authority. The doctrine has produced consequences across the post-Heresy era; the Legion has, by record, conducted approximately seventeen documented continued actions against sustained institutional arrangements that the Legion's senior officers had classified as institutionally analogous to the pre-Sack Olympian arrangement.
Medrengard's Specific Character
The Iron Warriors Legion's specific post-Heresy operational base — the daemon-world Medrengard, located in the Eye of Terror — has been the Legion's coordination center throughout the post-Heresy era. Medrengard's character is shaped by engineering: the entire world has been reshaped by the Legion's sustained engineering operations across approximately ten thousand years of post-Heresy operational engagement. The world's arrangement is sustained-fortified; Medrengard is, by record, the most-fortified single world in the broader Chaos institutional arrangement.
Medrengard's arrangements includes fortifications that exceed any Imperial Cult sustained-fortified position by approximately ten orders of magnitude. The arrangement is functional: Medrengard has, across the post-Heresy era, been engaged by the Imperial Cult on approximately twelve documented continued actions, in each of which the Legion's fortifications have repulsed the Imperial Cult's continued action. The Imperial Cult's working assessment is that "Medrengard's fortifications represent the most- engineering arrangement in the broader galactic operational structure."
The Eternal Grudge
The Iron Warriors Legion's specific institutional character has been sustained-aggrieved across the post-Heresy era. The Legion's doctrine maintains grievance toward specific Imperial Cult institutional arrangements that the Legion's senior officers have classified as institutionally analogous to the pre-Sack Olympian arrangement. The grievance is sustained-institutional rather than sustained-personal; the grievance has been inherited by successive Iron Warriors Legion senior officer generations across the post-Heresy era.
The grievance has produced consequences across the post-Heresy era. The Iron Warriors Legion has, by record, conducted continued actions against Imperial Cult institutional arrangements that the Legion's senior officers have classified as institutionally grievance-relevant. The engagements have, by Imperial Cult sustained-operational-assessment, been distinctive in their sustained-doctrinal commitment: the Iron Warriors Legion's engagements have been conducted to sustained-destruction outcomes rather than to sustained-strategic outcomes. The Legion's M42-era operational tempo has been stable; the Legion continues to engage Imperial Cult institutional arrangements through sustained-doctrinal grievance-operational frameworks.
