Sons of Guilliman's Pattern

The Howling Griffons descend from the gene-seed of Roboute Guilliman's Ultramarines, raised in the 33rd Millennium and counted among the most faithful keepers of his Codex Astartes. From their homeworld of Mancora they organise into ten companies precisely as the Codex prescribes, and they treat its strictures not as guideline but as scripture. Where the Ultramarines embody the Codex with cool statesmanship, the Griffons embody it with fierce, almost ritual devotion, every formation and rite observed to the letter. They are a proud Chapter, conscious of their primogenitor and their lineage, and they bear Guilliman's discipline into battle as a debt of honour owed to the Avenging Son of Ultramar.

The Quartered Heraldry

No Chapter is more consumed by heraldry than the Howling Griffons, whose warriors go to war in armour quartered boldly in red and gold, a livery proclaimed across the battle-line like a herald's blazon. This obsession with display is bound to their deeper creed, for the Griffons are a Chapter of oaths, and each oath sworn is a promise pursued without end until the deed is done or the oathtaker lies dead in the attempt. Before battle a Howling Griffon adds fresh vows to lists already long, some sworn for the whole Chapter, others fiercely personal. Once given, an oath is never forgotten, though solar decades pass, and the quartered colours are worn as a standing pledge to honour every word.

Doctrine by the Book

In war the Howling Griffons are textbook Adeptus Astartes, executing the manoeuvres of the Codex Astartes with a discipline so exact it verges on the devotional. They field balanced companies, combined-arms assaults and the measured tactical flexibility Guilliman set down ten thousand years ago, distrusting the wild improvisation other Chapters embrace. During the Badab War many Griffons stationed in the Khymara System still wore the Codex-approved Night World battle livery carried over from an earlier deployment in the Caradryad Sector, a small mark of how literally they take doctrine. Their oath-bound temper sharpens this orthodoxy into something relentless: a Griffons assault, once committed by sworn vow, does not waver until the objective falls.

Loyalists of the Badab War

When Badab seceded under the Tyrant Lufgt Huron, the Howling Griffons stood unhesitatingly with the Imperium, taking their place among the loyalist Chapters dispatched to crush the rebellion. They fought through the long compliance campaign as Guilliman's discipline demanded, and the war cost them dearly. Their Chapter Master in this era, Orlando Furioso, would later meet his end in the slaughter remembered as the Arios Point massacre, struck down on the very approach to Mancora as the Chapter travelled to mark the five-thousandth anniversary of its founding. The Badab War confirmed the Griffons' reputation as rigid, dependable loyalists, the kind of Codex Chapter the High Lords trust to do precisely as ordered.

Unbreakable Vows

The culture of the Howling Griffons turns wholly upon the sanctity of the spoken oath. To a Griffon an oath is the promise of unending effort, sworn before brothers and primogenitor alike, and to break one is unthinkable; a vow lapses only with its fulfilment or the death of the warrior who gave it. This makes them implacable on campaign, for a Griffons strike force will pursue a sworn objective long after pragmatism would counsel withdrawal. Their long memory extends to grudges as well as goals, and the Chapter has nursed a particular enmity against the traitor Word Bearers, whose Chaos Lord Periclitor inflicted grievous harm upon them. The quartered colours and the endless lists of oaths are two faces of one creed: a debt, once incurred, is honoured to the end.

Through the Black Crusade and Beyond

In the latter days of the 41st Millennium the Howling Griffons fought with distinction against the rising tide of Chaos, most notably in the Thirteenth Black Crusade, where they were drawn into the defence of Amistel Majoris against the Plague Marines of Nurgle. Under their Chapter Master Alvaro they upheld the Codex discipline of their forebears even as Abaddon's onslaught broke against the Cadian Gate and the galaxy slid toward ruin. True to their nature, they met the horror of plague and daemon with sworn oaths and quartered banners, pursuing each vow to its bloody conclusion, a Chapter that would sooner die honouring its word than survive having broken it.
