The Brother Who Could Not Stop

The Flesh Tearers were carved from the Blood Angels in the Second Founding, one of the successor Chapters of the Sanguinary Brotherhood raised after the Horus Heresy. From the first they were the most savage of Sanguinius's bloodline — the smallest of the Sanguinary Brotherhood's offspring, never more than a few companies strong, because the very fury that makes them peerless killers also burns them up faster than any homeworld can replace them. Where the Blood Angels master their inheritance with noble artifice, the Flesh Tearers have always stood closer to the abyss, the Red Thirst hotter in their veins and the Black Rage forever clawing at the edges of their minds.

The Reptile World of Cretacia

Their homeworld is Cretacia, a steaming Death World where the dominant life is great reptiloid beasts not unlike the saurians that once stalked ancient Terra. Its tribes are forged by constant predation into exactly the kind of merciless survivors the Chapter needs, and aspirants must hunt and kill the world's monstrous fauna to be considered worthy of the gene-seed. Under Gabriel Seth, Cretacia has been reduced to little more than an automated armoury and recruitment station, the bulk of the Chapter ranging far from home — for the Flesh Tearers cannot afford to sit still while their numbers dwindle and the galaxy burns.

Fury as a Weapon

The Flesh Tearers wage war as a controlled avalanche of violence, hurling themselves into close assault with chainblade and chainaxe where the Red Thirst can be slaked in earnest. They keep relentless patrol-arcs across the Segmentum Ultima and Segmentum Tempestus, frequently the first reinforcement to reach an embattled Imperial world — arriving like an answered prayer, then fighting with a ferocity that unsettles the very people they have saved. Their Chaplains and Sanguinary Priests labour ceaselessly to keep the Rage leashed long enough to be aimed, channelling damnation into purpose. When restraint finally fails, the Flesh Tearers become a horror to friend and foe alike.

Gabriel Seth, Guardian of Rage

Gabriel Seth took command of the Flesh Tearers in 815.M41 and wields the monstrous two-handed chainsword Blood Reaver, a weapon whose teeth he has fed on the foes of Mankind for over a century. He is a brooding, embittered warlord who fights at the forefront of every battle, holding the line between his Chapter's duty and its doom by sheer force of will. Upon his ascension the Sanguinary High Priest delivered a grim prophecy: that the rising frequency of the Black Rage and ceaseless battlefield attrition had at last outpaced Cretacia's ability to replace the fallen, and that the Flesh Tearers would be extinct within decades. Seth has spent his rule defying that sentence.

The Shadow of the Flaw

More than any other son of Sanguinius, the Flesh Tearers are defined by the Curse of the Primarch. The Black Rage — the death-memory of Sanguinius slain by Horus, surfacing in his sons until they believe themselves the dying Primarch reborn — strikes them more often and more terribly than it does the Blood Angels themselves, and the Red Thirst that precedes it is forever near. Their black-and-red iconography, their tearing blades, their reputation for butchery: all flow from this single inherited wound. They are not cruel by choice but by blood, and they fight on the knowledge that their gene-line is dying around them, brother by brother.

Outliving the Prophecy

As the 41st Millennium gave way to the Era Indomitus and the Great Rift split the sky, the Flesh Tearers fought on against the prophecy of their own extinction. Among the boons of the age came the Primaris reinforcements of the Indomitus Crusade — fresh-forged Astartes that bought the dying Chapter time it had no right to expect. Yet the Rage was not cured, only outrun a little longer. Gabriel Seth still leads his savage sons from the front, hurling them into the Imperium's most desperate hours across two sundered halves of the galaxy, determined that when the Flesh Tearers finally fall, they will fall facing the enemy with Blood Reaver still swinging.
