Not Astartes
The Adeptus Custodes are sometimes called Space Marines by Imperial citizens who do not know better. They are not. They predate the Primarch project; they are not gene-seeded from any primarch; their physiology is individually tailored by the Emperor Himself rather than mass-produced from a single template. Each Custodian is unique, individually designed, and individually loyal to the Emperor as a person rather than to an Astartes chapter as an institution.
They are also, by every measure that matters in single combat, stronger than Space Marines. A Custodian carries the wargear of a kingdom and serves as a Battle-Brother only secondarily; primarily he is a courtier of the Throne.
The Long Watch
For ten thousand years following the Heresy, the Custodes remained inside the Imperial Palace. Their mission was the personal guard of the Emperor on the Golden Throne — a defensive posture, and a static one. The wider Imperium scarcely remembered they existed. The Inquisition kept partial files. The Adeptus Mechanicus suspected.
During this period the Custodes refined their craft inwardly: weapons, armour, gene-craft, the daily rituals of Throne Room duty. The Companions — the inner three hundred who guard the Throne directly — have not left the Throne Room in ten millennia.
We are the Custodians, and we are with the Emperor always.
— Custodes catechism
The Talons Released
When the Great Rift opened in 999.M41, Captain-General Trajann Valoris invoked an ancient protocol — written by the Emperor Himself, sealed away since the Scouring — that permitted the Custodes to leave Terra and fight across the galaxy. The Companions remained at the Throne. Some thousands of Custodians, accompanied by the Sisters of Silence, took the field for the first time since the Heresy.
They have fought on Cadia's remains, in the Webway near the Throne, alongside Guilliman's Indomitus Crusade. Their reputation has been re-established by direct combat record.
Trajann Valoris
Trajann Valoris is Captain-General of the Adeptus Custodes in M42. He wields the Watcher's Axe and carries the Castellan Spear. He answers to no one but the Emperor — a relationship the Emperor cannot, in the current circumstances, audibly confirm — and operates effectively as a co-equal of Guilliman in the political structure of the Era Indomitus.
The Custodes do not consider themselves subordinate to the High Lords. They consider the High Lords subordinate to the Emperor whose household they are. The High Lords, since 999.M41, have learned to ask politely.
The Companions Origin
The Adeptus Custodes' specific institutional origin predates the Adeptus Astartes by approximately several decades. The Custodes were specifically established by the Emperor during the Crusade-era's earliest phase as a sustained personal-guard arrangement; the Custodes were created before the Astartes gene-engineering project had been completed, through a sustained gene-engineering arrangement that differed substantively from the Astartes engineering arrangement. The Custodes' specific gene-engineering arrangement was individualised; each Custodian was specifically gene-engineered by the Emperor personally rather than through the sustained mass-production gene-engineering arrangement that produced the Astartes.
The specific institutional consequence of the individualised gene-engineering arrangement is that the Custodes are individual rather than institutional. Each Custodian's capability is unique; the Custodes have no specific Codex Astartes-equivalent institutional doctrine because the Custodes' individual operational capability variations require individualisation rather than standardisation. The arrangement has been sustained for approximately ten thousand years.
The Throne Watch
The Custodes' specific institutional priority across the post-Heresy era has been the maintenance of the Imperial Palace's arrangements, with emphasis on the Golden Throne's integrity. The arrangement has been maintained continuously since the Heresy; Custodes have presence around the Golden Throne at all times, with rotation patterns that the Custodes have refined across approximately ten thousand years of continuous Throne-watch operations.
The Throne-watch protocols are sustained-classified within the broader Imperial Cult institutional documentation. The Custodes' arrangements around the Golden Throne are accessible to the Custodes themselves only; no non-Custodes individual has been permitted within the Throne's perimeter since the immediate post-Heresy period (with the singular exception of the Emperor's specific Sigillite-derived maintenance protocols). The arrangement has produced consequences: the Custodes have responsibility for the broader Imperial Cult's specific theological-and-operational foundation in ways that no broader Imperial institutional arrangement has been permitted to share.
The Talons Released
The Custodes' specific M42-era operational arrangement — the so-called Talons Released doctrine — represents the most-significant change in the Custodes' post-Heresy institutional history. The doctrine was consolidated by Captain-General Trajann Valoris in approximately 002.M42 in response to the Cicatrix Maledictum's opening and the broader Indomitus Crusade's requirements. The doctrine's arrangements permits sustained Custodes operational engagement outside the Imperial Palace's perimeter — an arrangement that the Custodes had specifically avoided across the post-Heresy era.
The Talons Released doctrine has produced consequences. The Custodes have, since 002.M42, conducted approximately one hundred and twenty documented continued actions outside the Imperial Palace's perimeter — engaging Chaos, xenos, and heretical Imperial threats across approximately twenty Imperial Cult sectors. The arrangement has been productive; the Custodes' capability has been effective at tempo levels that the broader Imperial Cult institutional arrangement had not been able to produce. The arrangement has also produced specific institutional consequences for the Imperial Palace's arrangements; the Custodes' specific Throne-watch operational protocols have been adjusted to compensate for the reduced operational presence at the Throne's perimeter.
M42 Valoris Operations
Trajann Valoris — the Custodes' current Captain-General, who has held the position since approximately 970.M41 — has shaped the Custodes' M42-era operational arrangement through sustained personal operational coordination with the broader Indomitus Crusade institutional arrangement. Valoris's arrangements with Roboute Guilliman has included: consultation on specific Indomitus Crusade strategic decisions, sustained Custodes operational deployment in support of specific Crusade operational engagements, and sustained Custodes operational coordination with the broader Crusade's doctrine framework.
The arrangement is unusual for the Custodes' broader institutional history. The Custodes had previously operated through autonomy from the broader Imperial Cult institutional arrangement; Valoris's coordination with the Indomitus Crusade represents the most-significant Custodes operational alignment with broader Imperial Cult institutional priorities in the post-Heresy era. The arrangement has been controversial within the Custodes' broader institutional arrangement; approximately twelve senior Custodes officers have, in classified internal correspondence, indicated operational reservations about the arrangement. Valoris has not modified the arrangement in response. The Custodes' direction across the next several Terran decades remains, by classified internal correspondence, "consistent with the Talons Released doctrine and the specific Valoris operational coordination arrangement."
