The Plan
Inquisitor Kryptman of the Ordo Xenos faced a strategic problem at the close of M41: Hive Fleet Leviathan was advancing into the Imperium's eastern fringe and had to be diverted or absorbed by some buffer the Imperium did not have to provide. The Inquisitor's solution was creative, controversial, and — in the Inquisition's own internal review afterwards — possibly worse than the problem it had been meant to solve.
He arranged for a Tyranid splinter-fleet to be redirected to the Octarius Sector, a region long-dominated by Warlord Grukk and his enormous Ork empire. The bet: that Orks and Tyranids would consume each other.
The War
The bet was technically correct. Both factions began consuming each other on a continent-by-continent scale across the sector. The bet was also strategically catastrophic. Orks improve through combat — the more they fight, the bigger and more numerous they get — and the Tyranid Hive Mind explicitly adapts to every enemy it encounters by harvesting biomass and engineering new bioforms.
Both factions grew stronger, not weaker. The war became a self-fuelling reaction zone in which neither side could be exterminated and both were learning to fight a more dangerous version of the other.
I have made a war that will not end. The Imperium will study its outcome for a thousand years.
— Inquisitor Kryptman, attributed M41
The Containment Failure
The Inquisition's containment plan — to keep the Octarius War sealed within its sector — has slowly failed. Tyranid splinter-fleets have escaped Octarius adapted by Ork-combat experience. Ork WAAAGH!s have spilled out of Octarius adapted by Tyranid-combat experience. Both kinds of veteran are now circulating through the wider galaxy.
Kryptman was formally censured by the Conclave. He was not, by Inquisitorial doctrine, executed — Inquisitors do not execute other Inquisitors lightly — but his standing was reduced and his subsequent operations were closely supervised.
M42
The Octarius War continues into the Era Indomitus. Both factions remain locked in escalation. The Imperium has acquired some intelligence about both that would not have been available without the war, but the cost-benefit analysis remains, in the most charitable Imperial reading, unresolved.
The War is taught at every senior Inquisitorial briefing as an object-lesson in the limits of strategic engineering against entities that improve from being engineered against.
Kryptman's Decision
The Octarius War was triggered by Inquisitor Lord Kryptman's decisions in 992.M41 to redirect Hive Fleet Leviathan's eastern splinter-fleet vector away from Imperial-held sectors and into the Octarius system — at the time, the Ork Empire of Octarius governed by Warlord Ghazghkull's specific senior subordinate Warboss Grukk Face-rippa. Kryptman's decision was unilateral and controversial. The Inquisition's senior council subsequently classified the decision as institutionally heretical; Kryptman was exiled from the Inquisition.
The operational rationale was sound by Kryptman's specific reasoning: a Tyranid-Ork sustained engagement would consume both species' operational strength at a rate that neither could sustain, producing operational outcomes that would benefit the Imperium without requiring direct Imperial engagement. The reasoning has been validated by the war's specific consequences across the post-redirect period.
The Sustained Tyranid-Ork Engagement
The Octarius War has continued since 992.M41 — approximately forty-eight Terran years of sustained Tyranid-Ork engagement across the Octarius sector. The engagement has been the largest sustained xenos-on-xenos military operation in documented Imperial intelligence history. Hive Fleet Leviathan's specific eastern splinter has lost approximately seventy percent of its operational strength to the engagement; the Octarius Ork Empire has lost approximately sixty percent.
The consequences have been mixed for the Imperium. Hive Fleet Leviathan's eastern splinter has indeed been degraded as Kryptman's specific reasoning predicted. The Octarius Ork Empire has, however, evolved into a sustained Tyranid-adaptive Ork operational arrangement; the Octarius Orks have developed specific tactical doctrines and biological adaptations against Tyranid creatures that no previous Ork population had produced. The evolution has produced operational outcomes the Imperial Cult had not anticipated.
M42 Status
The Octarius War continues into the Indomitus era. The Cicatrix Maledictum's consequences have included sustained warp-environmental disruptions in the Octarius sector that have affected both engaged species. The Tyranid Hive Mind's specific coordination of Leviathan's eastern splinter has been degraded; the Octarius Ork Empire's specific WAAAGH! coordination has been enhanced (Orks operate productively in warp-disrupted environments).
The implications for the broader Imperium are concerning. The evolved Octarius Orks, by classified Imperial Cult intelligence assessment, may break out of the Octarius sector within approximately a Terran century. If the breakout occurs, the operational threat to surrounding Imperial sectors would substantially exceed Ghazghkull's specific WAAAGH! threat at Armageddon. Kryptman's reasoning has been productive for the post-redirect period; the long-term operational consequences are likely to be costly.
